Widespread Panic
Comprehensive Mix of My Personal Stash

I started listening to Widespread Panic in 1998 after purchasing their first two albums and then Light Fuse, Get Away shortly thereafter. After hearing the live album, I was sold and haven’t stopped listening to them ever since. It’s been almost ten years and after a couple personnel changes I’ve decided that I want to take a break from Widespread Panic for a year or so, but I wanted something to listen to that I could take with me if I needed a quick fix. Something I could listen to in the guitar or strum along with on the old guitar. So I decided to mix up all my Widespread Panic CD’s and condense it as much as possible and I wound up with this 18 disc compilation. It’s not everything I’ve ever heard or have had at some point, but just what I have now. Like this here, is missing: there’s a mystery Fishwater that you’ve just gotta hear that came as filler at the end of my second show 11/17/99 at the Orpheum in Boston, and there’s the second set of the second night of Red Rocks ’03 where there was a Meeting of the Waters > Nebulous > Driving Song > Chilly Water > Imitation Leather Shoes > Chilly Water > Drums > Driving Song > Blight with a Traveling Man in the encore; and of course the acoustic set to start the run off and my first 2nd row center show w/George with the surprise first acoustic set and the second night’s killer Bear’s Gone Fishin’>Jam where I just shut my eyes and watched the light show in my mind. Not to mention the Boston Orpheum show I was at where they covered the whole first set with songs based on animals. That was neat.

No, those are the biggest things missing from this mix, but it’s got just about everything else.

It’s got a sick sandwich from my first WSP show at the Calvin Theatre in Northampton, MA 11/17/98 starring first Little Lilly (instrumental-three times no less,) a Four-Cornered Room and an undocumented possible 2nd ever Tears of a Woman before Drums. This show also had my Sandbox and closed the first set off with Postcard. They didn’t stop the whole time.

This mix has the best version of every song that I have in my collection, and if I had my way it would have a little more. That’s not to say it’s the best version of any song and it certainly isn’t a “definitive mix” by any means. There’s no Space Wrangler. There’s no Meeting of the Waters (a favorite of mine) and there’s no C. Brown. It’s just my favorites of the stuff that I have – by me, for me and I’ve decided that since it’s such a good mix I wanted to share it and I don’t see why I can’t. Maybe letting some of these songs out like this is controvertial. I feel that it might be and I don’t want to offend the band. I’m afraid that with this mix, some people may feel that they’ve got what they came for. Maybe we don’t want them around anyways… But the fact is that they’ve told us we can do what we want with it, so that’s what I’m doing and this is my way to spread the panic. I think it’s one of the most important things that I’m supposed to do while I’m here in PanicLand. Basically, I don’t care – Caveat Emptor – let the buyer beware, and if anyone suddenly finds themselves dissatisfied after listening well, then I think I’d better give them their money back. Nobody’s going to stop listening to Widespread Panic, or stop going to see Widespread Panic just because they’ve heard Opportunity or Wishbone.

But the thing is I’m tired. I’ve got road wear and I don’t even go anywhere. I see them maybe 2 days a year if I’m lucky. But I listen to them all the time. But these shoes are getting old and I’m starting to see an old man when I look in the mirror. REALITY HAS SET IN. When I splash water on my face in the morning it’s like trying to fool myself into thinking that I’m still young; and the only thing that’s been there every day between then and now is Widespread Panic so I’m going to take a step back and try to discover what is Me and what is Widespread Panic because next thing you know I’m going to wonder where not only my youth has gone but my self as well. I don’t want to wake up a stranger to myself.

It’s time to get a life. I’ll be back someday specifically to get old, but until then I hope you all have fun and you all get those songs you’ve been chasing. Have a good time!

-Jeff Landry (musiceater)

Thanks to comishawaka, Chillywilly_water, MattJ, mice_elf_again, winningteam, and etan10 over at The Diner who put this compilation together

Note:

A few of the songs listed (Nobody’s Fault But Mine, Smokestack Lightning, Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, Stop Breakin’ Down Blues and Me And The Devil Blues) aren’t the actual originals done by the original artists.

Sorry especially to Robert Johnson but I was unable to find good (sounding) recordings of either Stop Breakin’ Down Blues or Me And The Devil Blues.  Both tracks listed in this compilation are done by Eric Clapton and are from an album that Clapton did in tribute to Robert Johnson.   It only seemed fitting to use Clapton’s versions of these two songs.
