Gary Hoey (special Christmas show)
The Saint
Asbury Park, NJ (USA)
Dec. 1, 2007

For fans of Gary Hoey, rock & roll, and/or Christmas!!!

Q: Who is Gary Hoey?

A: Gary Hoey is one of the most talented guitar players on this planet! Of course, some of you reading this already knew that. But for the unitiated, let me just say that Gary's two largest claims to fame are probably: (1) his awesome cover of the song "Hocus Pocus", which was originally done by the group Focus, and (2) his rock & roll versions of well-known Christmas songs. In fact, he's put out 3 different Christmas albums over the years. Most of his earlier songs were instrumentals, but recently more of his songs have included vocals in addition to the excellent guitar work.

As I took along my Canon camcorder to Gary Hoey's Christmas show at The Saint, I figured I had little or no chance of getting permission to record the show. Well, as it turns out, I was able to ask Gary Hoey himself basically as he was making his way through the crowd to the stage; his response when I asked if I could record the show with my camcorder? "Yeah, I don't mind." Coooooooooooooooooooool!!!!!!!

The video of the show came out terrific, and the audio is surprisingly pretty good as well--at least, for a CAMCORDER. I had a great spot near the front of the stage (about 10-15 feet from Gary) and stood off to the right side of the stage, in front of the crowd. On the plus side, the audio has extremely little crowd interference during the entire show, but on the negative side, the audio is somewhat distorted because I was about 10 feet from the hanging right speaker. And again, please keep in mind this show was recorded with a camcorder and not Schoeps or similar recording gear!

As you can see from the setlist, there were lots of Christmas songs played because, after all, it was billed as a Christmas show! But there's also LOTS of new material from his "American Made" album as well as Hoey classics/covers (like "Hocus Pocus", "Low Rider", "Pipeline", etc.).

It was a truly amazing show and I'm extremely thankful to Gary for allowing me to record this very special show. Perhaps at some point I'll share the video from the show, but for now, I hope you enjoy the audio version. I've included some pics from my video in the torrent for anyone who might like to create artwork.
